This model kit is an introduction to structural engineering and the art of building bridges, and it has easy-to-follow instructions, tools, and paints that allow children to build faithfully-detailed models of historical spans including the ancient Roman arch, the classic truss bridge, and the suspension bridge. The casting compound and molds produce authentic-looking replicas of the tensile stress-reducing voussoirs that the Roman Empire employed in their bridges and viaducts; the truss bridge provides lessons in the symbiotic relationship between tension and compression as children construct the bridge using girders and gussets; the 3'-long suspension bridge requires building the towers and suspending the bridge with string, replicating t he design of The Golden Gate Bridge. The 48-page book covers the history of bridge building. Includes instruction booklet, river landscape base, sandpaper, paint, glue, and paintbrush. Ages 8 and up. The manufacturer has confirmed that this item meets U.S. Federal toy safety standards for lead. Landscape base with erected bridges: 51/2" H x 111/2" W x 10 1/2" L. (2 lbs.)
